Then read this blog in advance: “ Travel guide Pompeii: everything you need to know about Pompeii”.įour hours later, when we have seen the largest part of Pompeii, we walk back to the train station. This time, having more information and with the enthusiasm of Maurits, the ruins are coming alive much more. I have been to Pompeii a few years ago with Ries. With the app Pompeii – A day in the Past I fill in his information by reading about the buildings we visit, the houses we enter and the theatres that we see. When we walk through the old city in the sun, he bounces around with enthusiasm and facts. ![]() PompeiiĪnd he does not stop there, unbelievable how much he knows about the history of the Roman empire and Pompeii itself. He loves history, especially that of Roman times, during the train ride to it he tells everything about how people lived 2000 years ago. Maurits is very excited about the fact that he will finally see Pompeii. While we eat these on the terrace in the sun, our sleepiness slowly disappears. Ober Marco immediately recognizes us as brother and sister and conjures up huge chocolate croissants and strong coffee. Our apartment has a typical Italian breakfast, served in a restaurant just ten meters away. However, today Pompeii is on the schedule and we want to arrive on time. When the alarm clock rings we aren’t completely rested yet. It is already two AM when we are tired in bed and we all fall asleep fast! By train to Pompeii After another Aperol Spritz and a future prediction with Tarot cards (the prediction: I will make a long trip), we walk back home cheerfully. They tell passionately why Naples is so different from the rest of Italy! When they hear that Maurits has just had his birthday, he is congratulated from all sides and suddenly birthday cake appears. In the bar where we are at, it’s busy, the other guests are all Italian and soon we get talking to a group of locals. Officially Maurits has been allowed to drink alcohol for a week and a half and since we are in Italy, where my favourite drink comes from, we toast with an Aperol Spritz! After this, I look at Maurits, it’s his decision: are we going to sleep, or does he want to go into the city? He decides for the later one and from my previous visit to Naples, I know a nice bar: Libreria Berisio, a former bookshop where you drink cocktails between the old books. Aperol SpritzĬarlo, the owner of the apartment where we are staying, warmly welcomes us at 10.30 pm and shows us quickly where we can find everything. As soon as we step out of the plane a warm air is blowing towards us. It might well be a little more rugged, too something to consider if you want to take it on the road. You can get a perfectly decent cheap MIDI keyboard for way less than $/£100 if you shop around, but up your spend even slightly and you'll get your hands on a higher quality model with more features and higher specs. Many of the best MIDI keyboards also come with mapping templates for the most popular DAWs - Ableton Live, Logic Pro, FL Studio, etc - making it easy to get up and running and start producing music right out of the box. And talking of software, most MIDI keyboards include good value software bundles, and we have listed the highlights with each keyboard. Most options we recommend here also come with additional features such as knobs, pads, buttons and faders to boost creativity and give you even more control over your software. You can opt for a compact, portable MIDI keyboard that fits comfortably in a laptop bag, or you can go all-in with a full-size 88-note model with weighted hammer-action keys. There are plenty of models to choose from. They are mostly used to let you play and record with your DAW's software instruments and any VST synth plugins you might have installed. They can be plugged directly into your computer or laptop via USB - or, in some cases, operate wirelessly over Bluetooth or connect to iOS devices to control apps. MIDI controller keyboards not only enable you to play and record tunes into your computer, they also let you control software - and in some cases, other studio hardware - so have become one of the most essential items for the modern music producer. ![]() You can use the App the same way you use it on your Android or iOS smartphones. But because striping distributes the contents of each file among all drives in the set, the failure of any drive causes the entire RAID 0 volume and all files to be lost. Compared to a spanned volume, the capacity of a RAID 0 volume is the same it is the sum of the capacities of the drives in the set. RAID 0 consists of striping, but no mirroring or parity.RAID levels and their associated data formats are standardized by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) in the Common RAID Disk Drive Format (DDF) standard: Originally, there were five standard levels of RAID, but many variations have evolved, including several nested levels and many non-standard levels (mostly proprietary). Storage servers with 24 hard disk drives each and built-in hardware RAID controllers supporting various RAID levels For this configuration to provide a significant speed advantage, an appropriate controller is needed that uses the fast SSD for all read operations. For example, a fast SSD can be mirrored with a mechanical drive. RAID can also provide data security with solid-state drives (SSDs) without the expense of an all-SSD system. Most use simple XOR, but RAID 6 uses two separate parities based respectively on addition and multiplication in a particular Galois field or Reed–Solomon error correction. Many RAID levels employ an error protection scheme called " parity", a widely used method in information technology to provide fault tolerance in a given set of data. Industry manufacturers later redefined the RAID acronym to stand for "redundant array of independent disks". A similar approach was used in the early 1960s on the IBM 353. Around 1988, the Thinking Machines' DataVault used error correction codes (now known as RAID 2) in an array of disk drives.at IBM filed a patent disclosing what was subsequently named RAID 5. Around 1983, DEC began shipping subsystem mirrored RA8X disk drives (now known as RAID 1) as part of its HSC50 subsystem. In 1977, Norman Ken Ouchi at IBM filed a patent disclosing what was subsequently named RAID 4.Mirroring (RAID 1) was well established in the 1970s including, for example, Tandem NonStop Systems.Īlthough not yet using that terminology, the technologies of the five levels of RAID named in the June 1988 paper were used in various products prior to the paper's publication, including the following: Although failures would rise in proportion to the number of drives, by configuring for redundancy, the reliability of an array could far exceed that of any large single drive. In their June 1988 paper "A Case for Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks (RAID)", presented at the SIGMOD Conference, they argued that the top-performing mainframe disk drives of the time could be beaten on performance by an array of the inexpensive drives that had been developed for the growing personal computer market. Gibson, and Randy Katz at the University of California, Berkeley in 1987. The term "RAID" was invented by David Patterson, Garth A. ![]() RAID levels greater than RAID 0 provide protection against unrecoverable sector read errors, as well as against failures of whole physical drives. ![]() Each scheme, or RAID level, provides a different balance among the key goals: reliability, availability, performance, and capacity. The different schemes, or data distribution layouts, are named by the word "RAID" followed by a number, for example RAID 0 or RAID 1. ĭata is distributed across the drives in one of several ways, referred to as RAID levels, depending on the required level of redundancy and performance. This is in contrast to the previous concept of highly reliable mainframe disk drives referred to as "single large expensive disk" (SLED). RAID ( / r eɪ d/ " redundant array of inexpensive disks" or " redundant array of independent disks" ) is a data storage virtualization technology that combines multiple physical disk drive components into one or more logical units for the purposes of data redundancy, performance improvement, or both. For other uses, see Raid (disambiguation). For the police unit, see RAID (French Police unit). This article is about the data storage technology. |
